SUMMARY:IHSI Book Club - December 2026
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. \n \n \n \n \n \n	IHSI Lecture Series – Masking the Theatre: Traditions from Ancient Rome to Commedia dell’Arte \n \n \n \n Christopher Bungard\, Professor of Classics – Department of History\, Anthropology\, and Classics Butler University Sunday\, October 5\, 2025 2pm Fort Ben Library; 9330 East 56 th St. Indianapolis\, IN 46216 This talk will trace the uses of masks in Italy from the ancient Roman period through to Commedia dell’Arte. In addition to examining the archaeological evidence we have for masks in the earliest periods\, this talk will give the audience opportunities to explore modern reproductions of Roman masks in order to think about their usefulness for performers of comedies. Some might even be called to help with a bit of performance.  Christopher Bungard is a Professor of Classics at Butler University. In addition to articles published on the theatre of Plautus\, especially his clever slaves\, and pedagogy involving theatre practice for understanding the ancient world\, Dr. Bungard has been developing a series of Latin novellae aimed at new Latin learners. These novellae follow the life of a working-class family as they trek their way across Rome to go see comedies by Plautus. When not teaching about Classics\, Dr. Bungard is also very active in Scouting America\, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 171 in Indianapolis\, an all-girls troop.  No RSVP necessary Always free and open to the public Q&A will follow the lecture Light refreshments will be served.
