SUMMARY:ST. JOSEPH TABLE DINNER
DESCRIPTION:ST. JOSEPH TABLE DINNER\n \n\nWhy We Celebrate St. Joseph Day\nEven though St. Joseph played a prominent role in the early life of Jesus. He was not a highly venerated saint in much of Italy until the late middle ages. Today St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated all over the country\, but more so in the south. The origins of the Italian American version of St. Joseph’s Day most likely date back to Medieval Sicily when the saint was said to have answered the people’s prayers by ending one of the island’s legendary drought. Ever since\, St. Joseph’s day has been celebrated with a large Lenten feast often served to the entire village (or multi-family meals here in Italian American communities) and an elaborate altar dedicated to the saint. \nThe St. Joseph Altar\nThe altar tradition plays a major role in the veneration of St. Joseph and is the focus of the novena (nine days of prayer) before the actual feast day. The altars take on many shapes\, some forming a cross while others occupy a corner table or an entire wall. Most of these altars are broken down before or shortly after the dinner\, but I recall growing up that some altars became permanent displays. These permanent altars however\, became overgrown with statues and crosses\, flowers\, oranges and lemons during St. Joseph’s Day. Other decorations found on the altar include candles religious medals\, rosaries\, prayer cards\, fava beans and loaves of bread. Much of the altar\, including the citrus fruits and breads will be given away to guests when it is broken down. \nCOST: $25.00 Members\n$30.00 non-members \nDinner includes salad\, spaghetti & meatballs\, and tiramisu \nFor more details\, please contact Virginia (Ginny) Koss                                                      ginnykoss@msn.com or Cell: 630-209-1362

SUMMARY:Book Club - Unmarried Women by Matilde Sarao
DESCRIPTION:Matilde Serao (1856-1927)is widely regarded as the most successful Italian woman journalist of the nineteenth century as well as being an important writer of fiction. A great observer of life\, Serao focused her writing directly on the most pressing problems of a newly unified Italy\, urban poverty\, and the North/South divide. Historian and critic Benedetto Croce said of her that she had an “imagination that is limpid and alive”; Nobel Laureate Giosuè Carducci called her the greatest woman writer in Italy; and Gabriele D’Annunzio dedicated a novel to her. She was apparently on the short list for the Nobel Prize in 1926\, which ultimately went to the Sardinian writer Grazia Deledda. \nThis collection\, the first to make Serao’s short stories available in English translation\, reflects this naturalistic writer’s interest in the everyday drama of the lives of women in the Italy of her day.  In Serao’s spare and simple prose\, the young women of turn-of-the-century Naples come to life\, negotiating the details of school and work\, church and marriage\, in a world circumscribed by fathers and chaperones\, fiancés and bosses.  Infused with the writer’s deep sense of humanity\, their quietly involving stories—at once so poetic and so ordinary—attest to the transformative power of literature\, and to the promise that even the most humble life holds.

SUMMARY:Book Club - As a Man Grows Older by Italo Svevo
DESCRIPTION:Not so long ago Emilio Brentani was a promising young author. Now he is an insurance agent on the fast track to forty. He gains a new lease on life\, though\, when he falls for the young and beautiful Angelina\, except that his angel just happens to be an unapologetic cheat. But what begins as a comedy of infatuated misunderstanding ends in tragedy\, as Emilio’s jealous persistence in his folly\, against his humanity and earthy humor\, by psychological insight and an elegant simplicity of style\, As a Man Grows Older (senilita’\, in Italian; the English title was the suggestion of Svevo’ great friend and admirer\, James Joyce) is a brilliant study of hopeless love and hapless indecision. It is a masterwork of Italian Literature\, here beautifully rendered into English in Beryl de Zoete’s classic translation. Many copies are available at a reasonable price in the various book sites as it is used in university Italian literature courses. Also in Amazon. And…the action takes place in Trieste\, at the northeast end of the peninsula. At the time of the novel\, Trieste was part of Austria. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:ST. JOSEPH TABLE DINNER
DESCRIPTION:ST. JOSEPH T ABLE DINNER\n \nWhy We Celebrate St. Joseph’s day has been cele-brated with a large Lenten feast often served to the entire village (or multi-family meals here in Italian American communities) and an elaborate altar dedicated to the saint. \nFor more details\, please contact Silvana Martini Schuster                                                       silvams@comcast.net or Cell: 317-833-0994
