SUMMARY:2023 Chapel in the Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Italian POW Chapel in the Meadow at Camp Atterbury  Join the IHSI for our Annual Celebration of  Mass & Picnic  During WWII\, over 3\,000 Italian POWs were housed at Camp Atterbury. In order to create a place to worship which reflected their own heritage and felt like home\, some of these soldiers\, who had been artisans and craftsmen back in Italy\, got permission to use excess materials and their own ingenuity to create The Chapel in the Meadow.   Today\, we celebrate this legacy with an annual mass at the chapel. 10:15 a.m. Opening Ceremonies 11:00 a.m.  Mass The celebrant will be Father Cesar.  Father Cesar speaks Italian\, having spent 5 years studying in Rome.     Picnic follows Main dishes will be provided\, as well as water to drink Please bring a side dish\, salad\, beverage or dessert to pitch in  Mario Vian will chair the event. The mass at the chapel is always a poignant and solemn occasion followed by good camaraderie and good food. We hope you will make the drive to the Chapel and participate in this IHSI event\, which has such a historic significance.        Access to the Italian Chapel is: 65 South to the Edinburgh/Flatrock exit\, and continue west on Indiana 252 through Edinburgh.  Cross 31 and the road is called Old Hospital Rd.\, continue through to Camp Atterbury\, passing the Atterbury Rock.  Continuing west and following the signs to POW Chapel\, you will turn right (north) on Stone Arch Road. A sign will be there that reads “EVENT” and leads to the Chapel Parking lot.

Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles \n  \nWe are pleased to announce that the Lecture Series will continue in 2024\, and the first lecture is now scheduled. \nAn Introduction to the 18th Century Grand Tour of Italy  \nPresenter:  Dr. Michael Seaman\, Professor of Classical Studies and Italian Studies\, DePauw University \nSummary of Lecture \nBeginning in the late 17th century and continuing for over 200 years\, British aristocrats undertook what was later termed the Grand Tour of Italy. Young British gentry traveled to Italy in search of the foundations of Western Civilization\, taking in the history\, art\, and culture of the Bel Paese. In this talk\, Dr. Michael Seaman will give an overview of the Grand Tour. Topics explored include: Why did Britain’s elite undertake the Grand Tour? What cities were included in the typical itinerary and why? What did traveling through Italy in the 18th century entail? Prof. Seaman and his wife\, Prof. Francesca Seaman\, who Directs the Italian Studies Program at DePauw\, together organize academic tours of Italy with their tour agency\, Historia World Travel. \nDue to limited space \, RSVP’s will be required for this lecture. \nWe hope you can join us for this enlightening lecture by Dr. Seaman. \nPlease notify us of your attendance by contacting Susan Santore Lew by April 20 (email and phone below).
