SUMMARY:IHSI Lecture Series - Masking the Theatre: Traditions from Ancient Rome to Commedia dell'Arte
DESCRIPTION:IHSI Lecture Series – Masking the Theatre: Traditions from Ancient Rome to Commedia dell’Arte\nChristopher Bungard\, Professor of Classics – Department of History\, Anthropology\, and Classics \nButler University \nSunday\, October 5\, 2025 \n2pm \nFort Ben Library; 9330 East 56 th St. Indianapolis\, IN 46216 \nThis talk will trace the uses of masks in Italy from the ancient Roman period through to Commedia dell’Arte. In addition to examining the archaeological evidence we have for masks in the earliest periods\, this talk will give the audience opportunities to explore modern reproductions of Roman masks in order to think about their usefulness for performers of comedies. Some might even be called to help with a bit of performance.  \nChristopher Bungard is a Professor of Classics at Butler University. In addition to articles published on the theatre of Plautus\, especially his clever slaves\, and pedagogy involving theatre practice for understanding the ancient world\, Dr. Bungard has been developing a series of Latin novellae aimed at new Latin learners. These novellae follow the life of a working-class family as they trek their way across Rome to go see comedies by Plautus. When not teaching about Classics\, Dr. Bungard is also very active in Scouting America\, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 171 in Indianapolis\, an all-girls troop.  \nNo RSVP necessary \nAlways free and open to the public \nQ&A will follow the lecture \nLight refreshments will be served. We look forward to seeing you! \n October 5\n @\n2:00 pm\n\n	\n	Add to calendar	\n \n	\n \n\n\n	Google Calendar\n\n\n	iCalendar\n\n\n	Outlook 365\n\n\n	Outlook Live\n\n\n\n	Fort Ben Library\n\n9330 East 56th St.\n \n Indianapolis\,\n	IN\n	46216\n	United States\n\n\n	+ Google Map \n\n \n \n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n IHSI Lecture Series – Down in the Delta: Race Relations between African and Italian Americans in Mississippi\, 1880-1940 by Charlene J.
