It is with great sadness to inform all that our current vice president and past president of the Italian Heritage Society, Silvana Martini-Schuster has unexpectedly passed away. Silvana became very active in the Italian American community and Society since having moved to Indianapolis from northern Indiana a few years ago. Her enthusiasm was unparalleled along with an unmatched determination.

Silvana was born in the northeast part of Italy which at the time was in dispute with other nations. That area eventually became part of Italy. Although her passport had indicated that there wasn’t an official country of birth due to the disputed claims, it was viewed by her as an amusing bit of information she would often share.

As an organizer of many IHSI events, she always strived to make them better than before for members and more impressive than the last. One of her most passionate activities which she personally coordinated was the Society Book Club. It was a gathering of members that had a thirst for Italian literature and discussion. It also included a monthly luncheon at a local Italian restaurant with a showing of an Italian. film. It was always well attended and enjoyed by all.

The last event in at which she presided was “Serata Italiana”which was held at Daniel‘s Vineyard in McCordsville. It was one that I had the pleasure of coordinating with her which provided members with a chance to catch up with each other after a long hiatus of events due to the pandemic. Needless to say, it was also a success. There were of course so many more events and activities that she was involved with, but too many to mention here.

We will truly miss Silvana and all that she contributed to the IHSI. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
