We are pleased to announce that the Lecture Series will continue in 2024, and the first lecture is now scheduled.

An Introduction to the 18th Century Grand Tour of Italy

Presenter:  Dr. Michael Seaman, Professor of Classical Studies and Italian Studies, DePauw University

Summary of Lecture

Beginning in the late 17th century and continuing for over 200 years, British aristocrats undertook what was later termed the Grand Tour of Italy. Young British gentry traveled to Italy in search of the foundations of Western Civilization, taking in the history, art, and culture of the Bel Paese. In this talk, Dr. Michael Seaman will give an overview of the Grand Tour. Topics explored include: Why did Britain’s elite undertake the Grand Tour? What cities were included in the typical itinerary and why? What did traveling through Italy in the 18th century entail? Prof. Seaman and his wife, Prof. Francesca Seaman, who Directs the Italian Studies Program at DePauw, together organize academic tours of Italy with their tour agency, Historia World Travel.
