IHSI Lecture Series – Down in the Delta: Race Relations between African and Italian Americans in Mississippi, 1880-1940 by Charlene J. Fletcher, Ph.D.

This lecture will explore Italian migration and experiences in the Mississippi Delta between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. It interrogates the Italian padrone system as a form of confinement and examines relationships between Italians and African Americans because of their shared proximity and experience in the rural Jim Crow South.

Dr. Fletcher is an Assistant Professor of History and Co-Director, Hub for Black Affairs and Community Engagement at Butler University, Indianapolis, IN. Please join her as she explores this important period of history in Italian immigration history.
