Preservation consultant and architectural historian Dr. James Glass will trace the appearance and dominance in architectural fashions of the Italianate and Second Empire styles in Indianapolis from 1850 to 1880.

Based on research and writing done for Volume 1 of his book, Architecture in Indianapolis, covering 1820-1900, Dr. Glass will illustrate the profusion of Italianate style commercial buildings and residences that architects and builders constructed in the city.

He will also show how simultaneously the French Second Empire style found favor in impressive and often extravagant commercial and public buildings and residences.  The origins of both styles in European architecture and American pattern books will also be discussed and illustrated.

After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to purchase copies of Volume 1 of Architecture in Indianapolis, 1820-1900 and have them signed by the author.  Both Volumes 1 and 2 (1900-1920) are being published by Indiana University Press with the key support of Indiana Landmarks.

Registration information will be available in late September for both in-person and Zoom participation.  Visit indianalandmarks.org
