IHSI Cultural Committee – October 2022

On August 7, the Cultural committee continued its lecture series by hosting a lecture by James Glass, Ph.D., Principal, Historic Preservation & Heritage Consulting LLC.

Dr. Glass has a long career in historic preservation and is a regular columnist for The Indianapolis Star on Indiana history and heritage. He has given countless lectures for a variety of organizations locally, nationally and internationally. He is also working on a book on Indianapolis Architecture. Dr. Glass spoke to our audience on Italian Renaissance architecture, which was quite fascinating.

Dr. Glass has now shared this special invitation with IHSI to attend a lecture based on his forthcoming book, Residential Architecture in Indianapolis:

Monday, November 14, 2022
Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Avenue
5:30 Doors Open, 6:00 P.M. Lecture

Based on the forthcoming book, Architecture in Indianapolis, 1820-1920, the lecture Residential Architecture in Indianapolis 1820-1920 is sponsored by Indiana Landmarks. Tickets are $6.27 for general public and free to Indiana Landmarks members. For tickets in-person and on-line, visit https://www.indianalandmarks.org/tours-events/ or call 317-639-4534.

On August 31, the committee hosted our first private Italian dinner at Nicole Taylor Pasta and Backroom Eatery. It was a regional dinner based on the food traditions in Puglia:

Chef Tony Hanslits created a wonderful menu for the evening, staying true to the culture of Puglia:

  • Focaccia Barese
  • Orecchiette with Broccoli Rape
  • Meatballs with fresh tomato sauce flavored with basil
  • Italian Cream Pastry

The wines, selected and provided by the committee, were very representative of the region of Puglia:

  • Salice Salentino Rosso
  • Susumaniello
  • Fiano

Mauvene Borton provided music for the event, as well as lending her usual photographic talents. Ginny Koss celebrated a very special birthday on this night. All in all, the dinner proved to be an extraordinary experience thanks to the culinary expertise of Tony and Rosa Hanslits, along with an experience staff who provided excellent service.

Nicole Taylor makes dates available each year for private dinners. The calendar for 2023 will be available very soon. The committee will consider securing a date, or perhaps 2 dates, in 2023 due to the overwhelming interest in the event.

The final installment of our 2022 Guest Lecture Series will be held on Nov 6. Guest lecturer Carl Ipsen, Ph.D. will offer insight on the History of Puglia.

Dr. Ipsen is a historian of modern Italy and has been on the faculty at Indiana University since 1994. He was also the founding director of the IU Food Institute. For much of 2022, Dr Ipsen has been in Italy studying the history of olive oil. An olive oil tasting from the Puglia region will be offered at this lecture.
