On Monday, November 10, Dr. James Glass will again present an illustrated lecture on Indianapolis architecture. His subject will be Classical Architecture in Indianapolis, and he will begin with the origins of Classical design in the buildings of the Greeks and Romans, the use of Classical design in the Renaissance, and the rediscovery of Classical architecture in all of its forms in the United States and in Indianapolis. The presentation will cover early Greek-inspired buildings, such as the first Indiana Statehouse, then turn to Greek Revival landmarks, such as the Indiana School for the Deaf and Indiana Institute for the Blind. He will touch on buildings with Classical details derived from the Italian Renaissance, such as the current Indiana Statehouse and then talk about the influence of the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in reviving interest in Roman and Greek architecture in Indianapolis and elsewhere. Dr. Glass will then turn to such imposing Classical buildings, such as the Birch Bayh Federal Courthouse, the old City Hall, the 1915-17 Indianapolis Public Library, and the monumental Indiana World War Memorial Plaza.
Both Volumes 1 (1820-1900) and 2 (1900-1920) of Architecture in Indianapolis are being published by Indiana University Press with the key support of Indiana Landmarks. Additional support from Indiana Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
